Open house for Convention of States emphasizes special role for states in our self-governance

Published in Blog on July 30, 2018 by Laurie Wheeler

Last year the Northern Virginia team from Convention of States Virginia hosted then-Delegate Rich Anderson (51) at an Open House for supporters to learn more about an Article V Convention.

Warren Wheeler, COS Virginia Regional Captain, explained how the Framers unanimously agreed to write Article V of the Constitution in such a way as to provide for 'We the People' to rein in big government when Congress wouldn't.

Former Delegate Rich Anderson then spoke about the history of the Virginia state legislature, which began on July 30, 1619 in Jamestown. On this day, 399 years ago, 27 colonists assembled to create the first elected legislative body in the New World.

Today, as in the past, members of the Virginia General Assembly employ their citizen-legislator roles by meeting two months out of the year. As did their historic predecessors, they leave their "plow in the field" to serve their constituents for two months, then they "return to the plow."

Anderson reminded us that when our Framers wrote the Constitution, they insisted that when the federal government would one day go rogue, they expected the state legislators to be a firewall by calling a Convention of States.

With the federal debt toppling $21 trillion, irresponsibility has become the way of life in Washington, D.C.

Now is the time for us to work together to ensure our state legislators understand their unique role in calling a Convention of States.

Over 31,000 Virginians support a Convention of States, and that number grows day by day.

Now is the time to ensure self-governance for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren. Sign the petition and join our team.
