Last week, legislation initiated by COS Virginia failed to clear the Rules Committees of the Senate and the House of Delegates.
Republicans and Democrats alike kicked the can down the road rather than take even a small step toward reining in an out-of-control federal government.
As if to emphasize the point—surprise, surprise—Washington’s Republicans and Democrats colluded last week to cast off what few fiscal restraints had been in place. Congress abandoned Obama-era “budget controls” to increase spending $300 billion.
With Republicans in charge of Capitol Hill and the White House, the Treasury Department announced that the Trump administration’s first full fiscal year in office will see federal borrowing increase 84 percent, to nearly $1 trillion.
Washington’s elites have not only abandoned principle, but also commonsense. Our state legislators have the power and responsibility to stop them, and to return power to the people.
Instead, they chose to do nothing about the financial irresponsibility of our run-away Congress and White House.
Virginia's state legislators are proving themselves a sorry lot. They are unwilling to do what’s necessary to rebalance power away from Washington and restore popular control over the federal government.
So, instead We the People must—and will—stand and fight!
The entire General Assembly will be elected in November 2019, so these legislators will again have to reckon with us as their constituents.
When that time comes, our numbers will be even stronger. Convention of States has over 27,000 Virginia supporters, and there are more than 3 million nationwide.
