There's no question that our country is on a path to fiscal destruction. The national debt is out of control, and neither party is willing or able to reduce it. In the near-term, bad economic policies have caused inflation, a labor shortage, and the potential for economic stagnation.
The federal government can't be trusted with our nation's finances, and as Wisconsin Rep. Rick Gundrum explained recently during floor testimony, the states have a way to take control.
"My constituents want to see the federal government on a fiscally sustainable path," he said. "They believe the federal government has been getting out of control. Our Founders established the ability to have a Convention of States for a reason. It's about checks and balances."
"The national debt now stands at over $28 trillion, and a Convention of States can help the endless rise of debt," he continued. "In Wisconsin, we know how to be fiscally responsible. If Congress can't be fiscally responsible, then states like Wisconsin should take charge, and need to take charge of our own destiny."
An Article V Convention of States has the power to propose constitutional amendments that limit federal power, mandate term limits, and control federal spending. These amendments, once ratified by 38 states after the convention, can force Congress to balance the budget, limit spending, and cap taxation.
