The government cannot always guarantee its citizens’ safety. But when enough fentanyl to kill millions of Americans is pouring across the nation’s borders, it’s time for the government to step up.
At a press conference on Tuesday, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi revealed that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) recently conducted a raid against an American-based drug smuggling ring with ties to an international terrorist organization, in which it seized the most fentanyl in American history: 11.5 kilograms of concentrated fentanyl powder and three million fentanyl pills (or 396 kilograms). According to the DEA, “One kilogram of fentanyl has the potential to kill 500,000 people.”
“Behind the three million fentanyl pills we seized are destructive criminal acts thwarted and American lives saved,” said DEA Acting Administrator Robert Murphy. “This wasn’t just a bust—it was a battlefield victory against a terrorist-backed network pumping death into our cities.”
The Sinaloa Cartel
The operation's ring leader, Heriberto Salazar Amaya, reportedly worked for the Sinaloa Cartel, a transnational drug trafficking and terrorist organization. The Biden administration’s Department of Justice identified the Sinaloa Cartel as “the largest, most violent, and most prolific fentanyl trafficking operation in the world … fueled by Chinese precursor chemical and pharmaceutical companies.”
Sinaloa, formerly led by “El Chapo,” has been known to dig tunnels from Mexico into the United States. In 2016, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that law enforcement had discovered more than 140 “drug tunnels” into the U.S. since 1990. Many of those tunnels were linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.
In their raid against the Sinaloa-affiliated fentanyl ring, DEA officials arrested sixteen accused criminals, six of whom were living in the country illegally. The group had a presence in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Oregon and was heavily armed. Bondi called the historic seizure a “significant blow against the Sinaloa Cartel.”
More Than An Invasion
What do you call it when an international terrorist group, known for its cruel tactics, senseless violence, and drug trafficking, builds tunnels into your country and delivers enough fentanyl to kill potentially millions of your citizens? That’s more than just an invasion. It’s a direct and deliberate attack against the United States.
And yet, there are members of the media and elite establishment who still seem to sympathize with the cartels over the American people. Just this week, CNN was roasted on social media for hosting an interview with a Sinaloa gang member, asking him how he felt about President Donald Trump.
Protecting American families from the Mexican drug cartels must remain a top priority for the U.S. government. If we cannot secure our borders — even while we aid others in defending theirs — then we have failed in our most basic duty as a nation. By calling an Article V convention, we can help ensure that Washington, D.C., stays focused on the projects that matter to the American people.
As Convention of States President Mark Meckler and Senior Advisor Rick Santorum wrote about the border crisis, “Under our Constitution, it is clear that the states don’t need to beg the federal government to protect their legitimate sovereign interests, like protecting the safety of their people.”
“The founders,” they continued, “most feared an authoritarian central government, so they created a Constitution where the states, not the federal government, were at the top of the food chain.”
