Only a few years removed from being eligible for her parent's health insurance plan, freshman Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez thinks she knows how Americans will feel when they lose their private insurance under Medicare-for-All.
Her comments were first reported by Bloomberg's Sahil Kapur.
"@AOC, asked about warnings from Joe Biden on Medicare for All, says nobody is ‘heartbroken' at the idea of losing private insurance. ‘People like their health care, they like their doctor,' she says. ‘But I’d be interested in what the public polling on Aetna would look like,'" Kapur tweeted.

While Ocasio-Cortez might be optimistic about a total overhaul of our healthcare system, the American people aren't so sure. As the Washington Free Beacon noted,
The Kaiser Family Foundation found that Americans' view of the single-payer plan "can shift significantly after hearing information." Fifty-six percent of those surveyed support "Medicare for All," while 42 percent oppose it.
Fifty-eight percent oppose the plan, however, if told it would eliminate private health insurance plans, and 60 percent oppose it if it requires higher taxes. 70 percent of those surveyed expressed opposition to "Medicare for All" if it would lead to delays in getting some tests or treatments.
Medicare-for-All proponent Sen. Bernie Sanders even admitted that "there will be pain" in a transition to a single-payer system and that he'd have to raise taxes on the middle class.
But while costs and quality of care are big concerns, Americans are really worried about freedom. By granting the federal government total control over healthcare, Medicare-for-All eliminates yet another aspect of American life in which We the People should get to make our own decisions.
Self-governance is in our DNA, and Americans are rightly cautious about any scheme that shrinks our liberties and freedoms.
That's why millions of Americans have joined the Convention of States Project. An Article V Convention of States has the power to propose constitutional amendments that prohibit Congress from inserting themselves into the healthcare marketplace. These amendments can clarify the Founders' intention of a limited federal government, and force Congress and the White House to tackle only the issues that are explicitly mentioned in the Constitution.
Once these amendments are ratified by 38 states, single-payer plans like Medicare-for-All will be out of the question, and We the People will once again be in total control over our lives and the lives of our families.
