The Michigan Senate Government Operations Committee recently took a step towards liberty by voting 3-2 in favor of SJR-R, a resolution calling for an Article V Convention of States to propose constitutional amendments that limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, impose fiscal restraints on Congress, and mandate term limits for federal officials, including judges and the bureaucracy.
Under the dynamic leadership of Chairman and Majority Leader Senator Arlan Meekhof (SD-30), the committee took short testimony and then voted along party lines, passing SJR-R to the Senate Floor.
Senator Rick Jones (SD-24) is the primary sponsor of SJR-R, and Representative Lee Chatfield is the primary sponsor of a companion resolution in the House.
“Convention of States Michigan's grassroots volunteers are laser-focused on what the Senate does this week to stand against federal overreach,” said Catherine Zemanek, State Director for Convention of States Michigan.
“With less than 65 days to the midterm election, we are watching to determine which legislators will stand up for liberty and self-governance and which ones only pay lip service but vote against it.”
The Convention of States resolution has already been passed in 12 states, with 22 more needed to meet the constitutional requirement.
