The $24 trillion national debt is jeopardizing future coronavirus relief aid, according to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
In an interview with Politico, McConnell "several times... expressed worry" about new deficit spending as Congress shovels billions of taxpayer dollars into the economy.
“We can’t borrow enough money to solve the problem indefinitely,” he said.
“You’ve seen the talk from both sides about acting, but my goal from the beginning of this, given the extraordinary numbers that we’re racking up to the national debt, is that we need to be as cautious as we can be,” he continued.
Americans understand that racking up thousands of dollars in credit card debt will jeopardize their ability to pay for a sudden medical emergency. Our leaders in Congress, apparently, are only beginning to understand that basic truth.
The federal government's irresponsible spending over the last 30 years is right now threatening our ability to keep the economy afloat during the COVID-19 crisis.
Imagine how much better we'd be able to respond if we weren't already facing a $24 trillion debt. Rather than worrying about rescue spending, McConnell and other congressional leaders could provide the funds necessary to get us through this crisis. As it stands, thousands of small businesses and their employees will likely receive no aid as the second round of funding runs dry.
No amount of federal government spending will save our livelihoods. We must re-open the states and allow the most powerful economy in the world to flourish once again. But we shouldn't have to worry about the national debt when imposing temporary stopgap measures to keep the economy above water.
Our children and grandchildren deserve a federal government that is responsible with taxpayer money. They deserve a federal government that balances its budget, cuts wasteful spending, and keeps taxes low. Congress won't enact these reforms on its own, which is why the people and the states must come together to call the first-ever Article V Convention of States.
A Convention of States is called under Article V of the Constitution and has the power to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments can enact the fiscal reforms we need to strengthen our national finances and weather the next international crisis.
Millions of Americans have voiced their support and 15 states are on board. Sign the Convention of States Petition below to join the movement!
