Convention of States speaker attracts crowd at Young Women's Leadership Summit: 'Make history, be revolutionary'

The enthusiasm for change at this year's Turning Point USA Young Women's Leadership Summit was palpable as over 1,000 young women from 15 to 27 years old gathered to “identify, empower, and organize” to make change in our nation.

Convention of States, a proud sponsor of the 4th annual summit held in Dallas from June 14-17, was honored to have Myah Baeza, the 2017 recipient of the Margaret Thatcher Young Leader Award, as our speaker at the eagerly attended breakout session.

Myah is an Army veteran and served as Texas State Director for the Second Amendment Institute while attending Tarleton State University. She has worked as a Grassroots Coordinator for Convention of States and will represent the state of Hawaii for the DC Project to meet with legislators in D.C. and advocate for the Second Amendment on behalf of female gun owners.

Myah's challenge for this generation of educated, empowered women is to take bold steps toward change by getting involved in the Convention of States movement in order to limit the federal government's time, money, and power.

More than 12 U.S. Senators have been in office over six terms. That's 36 years! Seventy-two members of Congress have served over 10 terms. That's 20 years! Some have served as long as 45 years. It's time to propose term limits with an Article V Convention of States.

Our country is over $21 trillion in debt. Myah pointed out that it would cost every taxpayer over $150,000 to pay off our debt. It's time to impose restrictions on taxes, spending and borrowing with Convention of States.

Congress uses their power to pass more regulations on corporations and small businesses than they do to pass laws. In President Obama's last year in office, the government passed 3,853 regulations or 90,000 pages.

When Congress passes laws, they exempt themselves from the ones they choose while imposing them on We the People. It's time to limit the power of our legislators and the scope and jurisdiction of federal government with Convention of States.

After her presentation, Myah answered questions about the process and how a Convention of States would work, She reassured the crowd that any fear of rewriting the Constitution is unfounded.

“It is highly unlikely,” she said, “that the 38 states required to pass an amendment would approve radical change such as removing any of the fundamental rights we currently enjoy.”

So how do you get involved? First, go to the Convention of States website and sign the petition. Contact your local COS for volunteer opportunities. Speak to your legislators. Ask them to get the COS resolution passed in the legislature. If it's been passed in your state, there's still work to be done. Get involved in internships at the local level or become a District Captain.

“Our generation isn't represented because of those who have been in Congress for years. We - our generation – need to be involved to be represented,” Myah urged the crowd.

“Why does this matter? We want to save our future. We want to save our corporations and small businesses. We want to protect jobs. We want to make history. We want to be revolutionary.

"Imagine – we could be the next great generation!”
