The Convention of States Texas team recently received a letter from Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick congratulating us on our success in passing the Article V resolution. Patrick, who as Lieutenant Governor also serves as the President of the Senate, was instrumental in bringing about the passing vote in the Senate calling for the amendments convention. Ever the grassroots champion, the Texas Lieutenant Governor partnered with the Convention of States Texas grassroots army and Governor Greg Abbott, and included the Convention of States resolution as one of his legislative priorities for the 2017 session.
Dear Fellow Texans and Patriots:
I want to congratulate you on passage of the Convention of States resolution, making Texas the eleventh state to call for a convention of states to propose amendments to the US Constitution. The federal government has grown too big, too intrusive, too unaccountable, and it is up to the states to do their job of reigning it back in. Your persistent and active engagement on this critical issue was key to getting it passed.
As President of the Senate I fast tracked this bill after the Governor put it on his emergency call. Our Republican senators went to work and we passed it two weeks later. It was a great moment for America and for Texas and the Texas Senate.
The heritage of America is rooted in self-governance and citizen activism. This is a great accomplishment but there is more work to do and I encourage you to continue to stay involved. The most fundamental solution to our problems lies with the great people of our state and nation.
Recruit your neighbors and reach out beyond your own networks. Texas is the example for the nation in so many things and we must continue to lead in combating the unconstitutional expansion of federal government. That will only happen if the engagement of citizens of Texas continues to expand.
You and other engaged citizens are the hope for our nation. I am proud to serve you, and again congratulate you on your amazing work this session.
God Bless America and the Great State of Texas
Dan Patrick
Lt Governor of Texas
