Lafayette residents learn more about Convention of States and join the movement

Published in Blog on October 18, 2018 by Bryce Barras

On Tuesday, October 16, dozens of Lafayette residents and others from around the state attended a presentation by the Convention of States Louisiana team at the Abacus Banquet and Reception Hall.

The presentation covered everything from why we need a Convention of States to how Article V works and debunking the myth of the "runaway convention."

The event was organized by Lafayette District Captain Micah Hall.

"It was a success," Hall said of the event. "We're very grateful people took some time out of their busy schedules to learn more about Convention of States and join the movement."

The presentation was led by Louisiana State Director Bryce Barras.

"The group of people that came were tremendous," said Barras. "They asked great questions and some of them have signed up to volunteer."

Baton Rouge Regional Captain Paul Salvaggio provided technical support for the event.

"The room was full of people ready to learn more about this process and join the movement," Salvaggio said.

At one point in the presentation, Barras held up a copy of the United States Constitution Annotated saying, "This 3,000 page monstrosity is what the Supreme Court has done to the Constitution. How do we fix this? How do we reduce the number of pages in this book? You do that through constitutional amendments."

The United States Constitution Annotated contains all of the Supreme Court decisions on the Constitution.

"It is the actual Constitution in enforcement today," Barras said. "And that needs to change."

COS Louisiana Lafayette Event

The Louisiana team has been busy spreading the word about Convention of States and their recent successes in the state legislature.

They passed the application for a Convention of States in 2016 and passed a Commissioner Selection Act earlier this year. The latter details how the commissioners from Louisiana will be selected.

Earlier this year, the team held a similar event in Bossier and New Orleans, while giving similar presentations to other groups around the state like the Professional Republican Women of St. Tammany and the East Baton Rouge Republican Women.

The Louisiana team would like to thank Abacus for hosting the event. Their service, food, and atmosphere was great, and it wouldn't have been a success without them.

The Louisiana team isn't slowing down anytime soon. They plan on doing more of these events around the state. Be sure to lookout for the next event. It could be in your area!
