Hawaii team aims high, shoots for event-record number of petition signatures

Published in Blog on June 23, 2018 by Mark Kenneth White

District Captain Emil Svrcina and Volunteer Matt Satterlee flash their Hawaiian 'Shakas' while helping collect petition signatures at the recent Fathers Day Shooting Sports Fair in East Honolulu Hawaii.

The warm tropical setting couldn't have been better for the Convention of States Hawaii team members who collected an event-record 230 petition signatures over the Fathers Day weekend June 16 and 17.

The event was the Hawaii Rifle Association's annual Shooting Sports Fair held at Koko Head Shooting Complex, and 2018 was the third year in a row Hawaii's Convention of States team hosted their outdoor display table.

Many thanks go to the dedicated group of COS Hawaii team members at this event.

And by the way...

There are several stories of the origin of Hawaii's Shaka sign. The most common is that of Oahu Sugar Mill worker Hamana Kalili who, after losing the middle three fingers of his right hand, was given the less dangerous job of guarding the sugar train. His all-clear wave of extended pinkie and thumb was later imitated by children to become today's Shaka.

As a result, some say the Shaka commonly presented this way  should really be flashed like this.         Either way, the Shaka sign shows your aloha!
