Remember when the California DMV wrongly registered 24,500 people to vote (including non-citizens)?

Published in Blog on March 18, 2019 by Article V Patriot

There's been a lot of talk lately about empowering the federal government to take over a greater percentage of the American economy (aka, "socialism"). But have government agencies proven themselves capable of managing the affairs of the American people?

Anyone who's been to the DMV knows that the only honest answer is, "No." Case in point: this story from Convention of States Action President Mark Meckler about the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Well, this is disconcerting. My current home state of California has been registering people to vote willy nilly… including people who have no right to do so. Many of the violations happened at the Department of Motor Vehicles, that beacon of government ineptitude that so many Americans dread (and for good reason).  According to reports, the DMV may have registered over 1,500 people incorrectly between April 23 and Sept. 25 because of a “processing error.”

According to KTLA, a high number of people were incorrectly registered:

That includes legal residents who are not citizens, although the DMV says none of the people mistakenly registered are people living in the country illegally.

One Canadian national who’s lived in the U.S. 31 years told the Los Angeles Times that he knew it was a mistake when he was told he was newly registered to vote.

“When I saw that card, I just threw it out,” Randall Marquis said. “I know I’m not going to vote. I’m not allowed to vote, it’s stupid that I should be registered to vote.”

Well, isn’t that nice? Now California is depending on the good faith on non-citizens to police their voting status themselves. Nothing could go wrong with that, could it? But don’t worry. The state assures us that incorrect registrations will be canceled by the secretary of state.

Right.

But this is nothing new. Last month, the DMV announced it may have botched about 23,000 voter registrations because of a different error. So, does anyone else smell something fishy here?  If they admitted to 23,000 last month and another 1,500 in April, what’s the real number? Probably exponentially more than they are willing to admit.

This should scare anyone who cares about democracy.

You know what else should scare anyone who cares about democracy? Empowering even larger bureaucracies like the EPA and the IRS. Fortunately, an Article V Convention of States can limit the size and scope of these incompetent government agencies.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
