Few sentiments more cogently express what federal overreach can do to a dream than the words of Jakob Fay:
"Many an American Dream has suffered an untimely demise at the hands of an overbearing regulatory regime, strangled to death in an inextricable web of red tape. America, once a land of pioneers and explorers, has now given rise to an omnipresent class of bureaucrats and controllers equipped with a thousand ways to 'help you achieve' (or, alternatively, crush) your dreams."
So true.
So what do we do about it? Below are some action items that you can take to combat federal overreach and drive momentum for an Article V convention:
1. Sign the COS petition
It couldn't be easier to join the nearly three million Americans who have signed our petition below calling for a limited purpose Article V convention that will discuss and propose amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.
2. Establish a relationship with your state representative and senator (and their staff members)
One of the most important things you can do is make a personal connection with your state legislators in order to not only advance the COS movement in your state, but to do what the Founders wanted you to do -- be an active and engaged citizen who recognizes that the people have the power in this republic, not distant bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.
Legislators and their aides all over the country notice when the COS grassroots shows up to hearings and floor votes, but their attention is very much concentrated when they hear directly from us in significant numbers about how the federal government is trampling upon the responsibilities of the states and the rights of all.
Now that legislators are returning to their districts, make an appointment to visit and discuss Article V and COS with your representatives. It will make a difference and you will see results during legislative sessions.
3. Educate yourself/Stay informed
It's easy to feel overwhelmed in our culture of our information overload, but stay current with public policy, Supreme Court decisions, and regulatory announcements. Seek information from reliable news outlets while at the same time keeping a critical eye and ear on everything that you take in.
Also, keep up-to-date with the significant victories being won by the COS movement by visiting our blog and socials every day.
4. Stay after your federal representatives
While it is admittedly difficult to establish the same sort of relationship with a member of U.S. House or Senate than it is with state legislators, don't let members of Congress off the hook when they vote or support legislation that expands the power of the federal government.
Perhaps the most effective way to stay in touch is to establish contact with staff in the district offices of your House or Senate member. In addition, show up at town hall meetings and community forums that the members often host when Congress is not in session. Don't be afraid to ask critical questions and make them answer for particular votes they have cast in Washington.
5. Utilize social media
Online platforms are an effective way to communicate the proper role of the federal government and demonstrate how it has been abused. This information can be easily and rapidly shared on social media, forming a growing network of like-minded people.
Just in the last few days engagement on COS socials has skyrocketed. You can share content like this piece about Mark Levin discussing Article V on social media, and you can actively participate in our daily social media campaign by clicking here.
The power of social media and grassroots engagement is well-demonstrated by this post on X about COS from June 5, which already has over a million views.
Don't permit federal overreach to drain the spirit of independence that was nobly won by our forefathers. Don't permit federal overreach to crush American dreams.
Now is the time to restrain the federal government from acting beyond its bounds. The states can and must do it, and you can be a vital part of that.
Let's get to work. You can start by checking off the first of the above action items by signing the COS petition below:
