Convention of States Delaware held its first rally at Legislative Hall in Dover on Tuesday, June 7 at 9:30. Over 100 Delawareans showed up to voice their support for the movement.
The event kicked off with an invocation by Rev. John Campbell, a new member of the Delaware team. Roger and Meredith Watkins sang the national anthem, and members of Pack and Troop 239 of the Boys Scouts of American performed a flag ceremony. The Boy Scouts revived fond memories in many of the spectators of their own days in the Scouts.
After the opening ceremonies, three members of the Delaware team spoke about their own experiences in COS. Michele Williams shared about her experience in the military and her oath to defend the constitution, and then her conviction that her work with COS is fulfilling the same promise. Tanya Hettler encouraged the crowd to join the COS team, become a district captain, and develop friendships with like-minded citizens. Finally Ben Cassell, our legislative liaison, informed us about the current situation with regard to the legislature.
Our keynote speaker was Mark Meckler, national president of COS. He discussed the current state of division in the country, but pointed out that our country has always had serious divisions. This is the reason that federalism is so important: so that each region of the country can pass the laws that they believe in, instead of the federal government deciding for everyone. This is why we need the Convention of States.
After the rally, many of the attendees visited their state representatives to give them literature and ask for their support. In addition, we got over 40 new petition signatures. Overall, it was a very successful first rally for the First State!
