The federal government can't be trusted with taxpayer money. The Washington Free Beacon uncovered yet another reason why:
The federal government incorrectly paid states hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses to expand health care coverage before Obamacare's implementation.
The Obama administration erroneously sent $277 million to state governments that inflated the number of children enrolled in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The federal government began offering bonuses to state programs to help cover the costs of expanded child coverage shortly after Obama took office in 2009. Over the next four years, the program paid out $645 million in bonuses, 43 percent of which turned out to be "unallowable," according to a new report by the inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services.
Miscalculations and administrative errors, such as counting disabled people as children in the total tally, drastically inflated the number of children covered by state health care systems, leading to chronic overpayment.
Everyone knows that Washington wastes our money, but many Americans feel powerless to do anything about it. D.C. seems too big, too powerful, and too far away to enact any meaningful change.
But there is hope. The Founders included in the Constitution a method by which the states and the people could come together to implement real, effective solutions to our nation's most pressing problems.
Article V describes a way for the states to propose amendments to the Constitution. At this Convention of States, the people and the states can clarify the Founders' vision of a small, limited federal government, one that doesn't need billions in revenue every year.
With this more limited government in place, the feds will be entrusted with less taxpayer money and have fewer chances to throw it away. A Convention of States can also propose amendments that force Congress to be fiscally responsible, such as a balanced budget amendment, spending limits, and real tax caps.
