Father-son teamwork for Convention of States Virginia

The following was written by Regional Captain John Dahmen and his son Jordan.

John's Story

We are in a perilous time in American history. What We the People do next will have a cascading affect for my children and their children.

What continually resonates in the back of my mind is the story of Ben Franklin exiting the Constitutional Convention and being asked what sort of government the delegates had created.

His answer was: "A republic, if you can keep it." What Franklin suggested then still holds true today.

Citizen activism is essential to assure a representative government. Franklin knew that if the bottom-up structure subverted to a tyrannical force, it would be because of an uneducated or complacent constituency.

I have always encouraged my children to participate in their community and to vote. It does me proud to see my son Jordan being active in politics even while starting a career and family of his own.

Jordan's Story

From a very young age, I can recall my parents discussing politics and the merits of certain ideas.

I first took a personal interest in our government twelve years ago, when I turned 15.

Throughout my time being homeschooled, my mother and father took great care to ensure that my siblings and I understood, not only the history and founding of the United States, but also the history of other major civilizations.

Those lessons in history--combined with my newfound interest in politics and our government--gave me a new perspective on the need for all citizens to take a proactive role in overseeing and monitoring our government.

Or, as a wise man once said, "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." From our Founding Fathers to Abraham Lincoln, they all warned us that our greatest weakness was from within ourselves.

Today, I see a federal government eager to seize rights with powers never granted to or intended for it.

While I admire those who go to Washington, D.C., in hopes of making a positive impact, I have also come to the conclusion that this is not a long term answer to the problems plaguing our federal government.

I had heard others talk about an Article V Convention of States, but, after doing my research and watching my father's involvement in this movement, I am certain that this is our best chance to correct the course of our federal government.

That is why I have chosen to support and become involved in Convention of States.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention for proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington, DC.

I support the Convention of States Project; a national effort to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of Article V Convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support the Convention of States Project and consider becoming a co-sponsor of the resolution. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
