It is said that the eyes are the window to the soul.
This month's episode of "Grassroots Groundbreakers" will demonstrate just that.
You will hear the amazing story of superstar COS activist Michael Rilee when you click here.
Convention of States Action Chief Grassroots Officer Mike Ruthenberg talks with COSA Union Region Associate Regional Director Steve Patten about Michael's poignant story and his absolute dedication to the movement to call an Article V convention.
Steve discusses Michael's journey with COS as a District Captain in Montgomery County, Maryland. Steve details how well Michael grew the district for COS in a traditionally "blue" area of the state, and his volunteering for the position of State Communications Coordinator -- a position in which he excelled despite being somewhat introverted.
Steve also talked about handing the reins of the State Director over to Michael, who continued to build on the mission-focused culture of what has become one of the most vibrant and successful teams in the country.
But things took a dramatic turn for Michael, as Steve recounts being on a Zoom meeting with him when Michael suddenly said "I gotta go. My legs aren't working. Something's wrong. I just fell."
Michael's condition grew progressively worse. He became unable to walk or dress himself. He eventually lost the ability to speak.
Michael had to be moved to a full-time care facility where he is currently on a ventilator and a feeding tube. He has no muscle control with one exception -- the muscles around his eyes.
Steve's description of how Michael has adapted to such a harrowing turn and the effort that Michael continues to make for COS with his eyes is worth its weight in gold and a look into a truly beautiful soul.
As Steve says, "Michael has put his heart and soul into saving this country."
