In a display of deceit and misinformation, a handful of members of the Republican senate majority in Kansas orchestrated a derailment of SCR-1611 (Kansas' application to join the Convention of States). It is sad to see self-proclaimed conservatives working with leftists to denounce the rule of law and say it was in the spirit of upholding their oath to the Kansas Constitution.
While diverting from the merits of Kansas joining the effort to call a convention for proposing real reform to an ever growing out of control federal government, these Republicans used diversionary tactics to try and “muddy the water” on the subject at hand. Their diversion tactics worked when coupled with the Democrats clear opposition to the measure that would see the state of Kansas joining Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, and 12 other states in calling a meeting of the states to discuss term limits on Congress and real fiscal reforms on a bankrupt federal government.
After a couple of hours of filibustering from Senator Hilderbrand (R-Galena) and Senator Pyle (R-Hiawatha), the water was quite murky. Senator Tyson (R-Parker) was using that time to rally support with Democrats to help in the time-killing maneuver. Senator Olson (R-Olathe) used the murkiness to offer a motion that would ultimately kill the legislation for the year and limit the debate on the merits of the resolution further. Their tactic worked, and the Convention of States resolution was “sent back to committee” and stalled until next January when the legislature reconvenes.
