The D.C. Dumpster Fire

Published in Blog on December 19, 2019 by Brett Sterley

Regardless of your position on President Trump’s impeachment, I think we can agree that Washington, D.C., is a circus.

The mere mention of a President’s name elicits a visceral response. Just having a rational conversation is a challenge. Congress has an approval rating like that of the Bubonic Plague, yet politicians raise and spend millions of dollars each election cycle for jobs that pay less than $200,000 a year.

We sit on the edges of our seats each summer waiting for the Supreme Court to determine our country’s direction on major issues of contention.

So, how did we get here?

It would seem to take considerable effort to get to this point. Quite the opposite. States unwilling to fulfill their constitutional obligations and too few citizens willing to engage in the political process has left the federal government to monitor itself.

How’s that working out?

The Framers understood history and how central governments behave. They knew that government left unsupervised would run amok. We certainly see that firsthand.

The good news is that the Framers gave us a solution as big as the problem. There are more people discussing the Constitution and our Founding Principles than I recall in my lifetime. Polling across the country, from red state to blue state, shows super-majority support for using the Convention of States process to rein in the federal government.

This Fall has been the most active legislatively in the six-year history of the Convention of States Project. We have made significant strides in Idaho, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, and more.

In Missouri we will be moving our Commissioner Selection Resolution. This will establish the process Missouri will use to choose our delegation for the Convention of States meeting.

We need you at the Capitol. Grassroots involvement is what it takes to move legislation. Moreover, it is your responsibility as a citizen to be involved in the process.

Watch for calls from your state team and do what you can to defend the Constitution. Let’s get to work!
