Sen. Ted Cruz just proposed a term limits amendment. But will it pass?

Published in Blog on January 09, 2019 by Article V Patriot

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz, along with Sens. Marco Rubio, Mike Lee, and David Purdue, just introduced a constitutional amendment that would limit senators to two terms of office and representatives to three.

"For too long, members of Congress have abused their power and ignored the will of the American people," Cruz told ABC. "Term limits on members of Congress offer a solution to the brokenness we see in Washington, D.C. It is long past time for Congress to hold itself accountable. I urge my colleagues to submit this constitutional amendment to the states for speedy ratification."

Cruz and his colleagues have the right idea, but it's unlikely their fellow congresspeople will join them.

The Texas senator introduced the same constitutional amendment last year, and it got nowhere.

The fact is, while some of our elected officials are willing to step aside, the vast majority will never end their own careers. They have too much on the line -- money, power, influence -- to give up willingly.

That's why We the People need to work with our state legislatures to call the first-ever Article V Convention of States. Rather than work through Congress, the states can propose their own constitutional amendments via the process outlined in Article V of the Constitution.

Under this process, if 34 states call for a Convention, they can meet and officially propose a term limits amendment along with fiscal restraints and power limitations.

If Cruz and others really want term limits, they'll throw their weight behind the states, the people, and a Convention of States.

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
