California is often the proving ground for policies later adopted by big-government "elites" nationwide. From gun control to gender ideology to education, what happens in California often moves to the halls of power in Washington.
Most recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill that would require large retailers to install "gender neutral" toy sections so that children don't "conform to gender stereotypes."
It's unclear where Newsom derives the authority to make such a sweeping declaration, and Convention of States Action President Mark Meckler took him to task for the latest round of tyranny.
"Is this a major problem?" Mark asked. "This is what California is doing. They've got people leaving the state in droves. They have the highest gas prices in the nation. It's hurting the poor because this is what the wealthy want for California."
Fortunately for Mark and the other ex-Californians living in states across the country, it's possible to escape these insane policies. Our federalist system allows states to pursue their own destinies and chart their own paths. If Californians want to live in a society that mandates gender-neutral toy aisles, they have the right to implement that policy.
But what happens when the federal government gets into the toy business? They've already mandated vaccines in the name of "public health." According to leftist ideology, gender harm is far more damaging than COVID-19. Using their logic, they could easily impose California's mandate nationwide.
That's why we must call a Convention of States. An Article V Convention of States can propose constitutional amendments clarifying the truth that Washington does not have the power to impose nationwide mandates.
These amendments can strip the unlimited power they've given themselves under the Commerce and General Welfare clauses and force them to legislate only on topics expressly mentioned in the Constitution. Toy aisles are nowhere to be found in our founding document, so that and all other everyday issues will be left to state and local governments.
We can't wait until Biden and other big-government politicians destroy even more of our freedoms. We must urge our state legislatures to pass the Convention of States Resolution and restore self-governance and true freedom in our country.
