Liberty in Lockdown
As we complete our second week of a state “stay at home” order, it’s not getting any more natural. When heading out to the grocery store or other “essential” activity, we pass by vacant parking lots that should be teeming with activity. Now, they stand eerily idle.
The focus of the Article V Convention of States process is to contain the federal government to their enumerated powers and protect our principles of federalism. In this case, the federal government has not been the entity that has violated our individual rights, (the misnamed CARES bill notwithstanding). These orders have mostly come from the states. So, what do we do about that?
This is where our responsibility of being engaged, self-governing citizens comes into play. Hopefully, you’ve been able to develop a relationship with your legislators. As constituents, we should reach out to them to check on their well-being. They are suffering as well.
Their families and businesses have likely been affected. They may be plugged into community needs that we can assist with. Now is a time to strengthen our communities. Their legislative staffs are working remotely but, their Jefferson City offices are still open. Make it a point this week to contact your state senator and state representative.
We at the Convention of States have tried to make this as easy as possible. Download the COSAction app in the iTunes or Google Play store. If you have a CitizenBuilder profile (click to here create one), you can log in to this powerful tool.
There is an ongoing call to action to e-mail your state legislators. We have a customizable e-mail template checking on the health of your legislators and family along with asking them if they know of any community needs.
Please take advantage of this tool. It’s easy to use. If you have questions, shoot me an e-mail at brett.sterley@cosaction.com. I’ll be sure to connect you with a COS volunteer who can walk you through the app. If I can figure it out, anyone can!
So, reach out to your state senator and state representative this week. It looks like they will spend part of the week in Jefferson City. They will appreciate your concern and wanting to be involved in your community.
In liberty,
Brett
