Brett's Blog: Monday, December 26, 2022 - Next Verse, Same as the First

Published in Blog on December 24, 2022 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

Congress gave us all a Christmas present on Friday December 23rd. It was a present they give us each year. No, not socks or underwear or candles or towels. The gift Congress gave us was one we did not even have the chance to unwrap. It is a gift they neither purchased nor read themselves. Congress gifted us another $1.7 trillion dollars in spending. Here is what that number looks like - $1,700,000,000,000. Here are a few of the details as reported by Senator Rand Paul to Fox News.

  • $475,000,000,000 to pay interest on the national debt
  • $1,700,000,000 to maintain vacant government buildings
  • $168,000,000 to help illegal immigrants avoid deportation
  • $3,000,000 to inject hamsters with steroids to fight each other
  • $2,300,000 to inject Beagles with cocaine
  • $1,100,000 to study drunk mice
  • $689,000 to study attraction between parrots
  • $200,000 for espresso machines for the military
  • $187,000 to study the relationship between children and pets
  • $118,000 to decide whether Marvel Comics character Thanos can snap his fingers in a metal glove

I don’t know about you but, I will not be sending them a thank you card.

This is our money they are wasting. Whether the federal government takes our private property through direct taxation, borrowing our printing money out of thin air, We The People are responsible for repaying these debts. The federal government continues to commit fiscal child abuse. When are we going to say, “Enough is enough?” When are we going to say, “Here and no further?”

The Framers gave state legislators the ability to fight federal government tyranny, not us? What can an ordinary person like me do?

One thing we have learned is there is no problem a sufficient amount of grassroots encouragement cannot solve. In a passed state like Missouri, we have accomplished the task of passing our Convention of States Project’s resolution to call for an Article V meeting to propose constitutional amendments to limit the size, scope and jurisdiction of the federal government, restore fiscal restraints and propose term limits for federal officials.

This is only the first step in the process. Most states do not have a process to select commissioners to represent their state at an Article V convention of states meeting. This is legislation we need to be involved in crafting and lobbying our legislators to support. This is a project our Missouri Team will be involved with this legislative session. Our Commissioner Selection Bill in the Senate is SB274. The identical bill will be filed in the House soon. This bill will not be passed unless we make it happen. This means going to the Capitol, calling and emailing our legislators to educate them about SB274 and ask for their support. This is made much easier if you as a constituent already have an open dialogue with your legislator.

Continuous education is just as necessary in a Passed State as in a state which has yet to pass. As a term limited state, Missouri will have over 60 new legislators sworn in on January 4, 2023. Do you know who your Representative and Senator is for your district? If you do, have you spoken to them? As a self-governing citizen, we should have these relationships to not only advocate for the Convention of States Project but to discuss concerns within our district.

We want to have a voice in the commissioners selected to represent our state at an Article V meeting as well. The state ratification process is a difficult one. We must continue to educate our fellow Missourians about the issues and the process in order to successfully ratify amendments that put the federal government back into its constitutional box. Passed states have the responsibility to lead and assist other states to secure passage of their state’s resolution. Our team has also been active in Get Out the Vote efforts in state elections along with the primaries and midterms. We have made tens of thousands of contacts that have moved school board, state and national elections.

Our mission is to develop the largest team of self-governing citizen activists who are committed to defend the Constitution and our Founding Principles. We have accomplished this but our work is far from over. We have to continue to grow until defending freedom and advocating for liberty is the prevailing force in American politics. Being a self-governing citizen means more than just voting. We have just been given 1.7 trillion more reasons showing that just voting is not sufficient. We The People can make the difference. We have to be active and involved though.

I invite you to join us at the Capitol on Wednesday January 4, 2023 for Opening Day and HERE is a page with additional information about this event, We will have a constant presence at the Capitol this session as we always do. If you would like to be part of this activity, be on our statewide call on Monday January 2, 2023 at 8 p.m.

We will also have our Capitol Surge event on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 and HERE is a page with additional information about this event. We also have a Prayer Team to pray for safety and wisdom for our legislators, their staff and families. Watch your text messages and e-mails for more details on each of these activities.

Whether you have an hour a day, an hour a week, an hour a month or an hour a year, there is something you can use that time for to advance the cause of liberty. Have a safe and Happy New Year.

In liberty,

Brett
