Political philosophy, or the study of government, consists of several variations. Yet, the common thread among them is the proper role of government and its source of governing authority. These philosophies range from Anarchy, which is the absence of government, to Totalitarianism or total government control.
From time to time we see glimpses of true anarchy here. For instance, the Venezuelan gangs who've recently taken over and occupied an apartment building in Aurora, Colorado or, the smash and grab crimes in many major cities across our country. These are examples of anarchy that stems from a reluctance to enforce the law.
History provides many examples of totalitarian government. We see this in real-time in countries like China, North Korea and Russia. In these countries, if you speak out against the central government, there’s a good chance authorities will ferry you away never to be heard from again. Today in the United States, it can be argued we are living under a soft tyranny. The federal government has colluded with social media to suppress speech. It has unleashed law enforcement against its political opponents and is presently attempting to throw President Trump in jail under specious accusations.
And yet, in today’s world Conservatism and Liberalism are still the most common political schools of thought.
Conservatism is characterized by the adherence to customs and practices that have proven to be successful over time. The traits of healthy societies throughout history include personal responsibility, the rule of law, thrift, family and faith. Societies that emphasize a subservience to government exhibit secularism, collectivism and idol worship – all of which have led to political unrest and the absence of a civil society.
Today, our political Left seems to more effectively fight for their deviant principles because their policies are largely contrary to human behavior. Force is the only way an otherwise healthy society would adopt their policies. This is why words like ‘mandates’ or ‘requirements’ frequently accompany modern-day liberal policies. Additionally, liberals are more accustomed to confrontation because that’s what’s required for their worldview to be accepted.
On the other hand, Conservatives or people on the Right, are not naturally adversarial. They adhere to the core principle of personal responsibility – that each person maximizes their potential by their own work ethic and drive. Each person being “the best they can be” benefits the individual, their family and society as a whole. Self-interest is an innate human trait, and societies that allow the human spirit to flourish have proven to be more successful over time.
Faith is another differentiating factor among political philosophies. Conservatism understands that man is not at the top of the food chain. There’s a higher power we all must answer to at some point. This tempers human self-interest to not be selfish but to emphasize the importance of family and compassion for others. Faith is promoted through the Church and fellowship with other believers.
And yet, today the Church has largely abandoned politics and it’s a void the enemy happily fills. This is evident in the slide toward the United States being a more secular regressive society. I use the word ‘regressive’ instead of the Left’s preferred term ‘progressive’ as there is nothing progressive about their ideology. The only thing that progresses under modern-day liberalism is the government. God has not left society. Society has left God.
This makes perfect strategic sense. In the 1990s NBA, the Pistons, Knicks and Jazz would have likely been multi-time world basketball champions if it weren’t for the Chicago Bulls. Specifically, if it weren’t for one player - Michael Jordan. He was the best in the NBA and arguably the best player in the history of the game. That history goes back quite a way. But, what if he were injured or otherwise unavailable to play? Do you think that would have made the Bulls easier to beat? Of course it would.
We shouldn’t be surprised the enemy wants our best player taken off the court or field of play. It makes perfect sense. Unlike Michael Jordan, our best player has never lost a game. He IS the game. He is undefeated. We do not have to work harder than our opposition. If we are faithful to God, we just have to work hard enough. Then, we can let our best player do His thing. Liberty and our free society have devolved because not enough freedom-loving individuals have been willing to fight. That’s changing. Convention of States Action is a conduit for not just a political revival but a spiritual one as well.
The final result may not be what we’ve envisioned. It may not be victory as we define it. We do not have the infinite, perfect vision God has. Our task is to be faithful and follow the truth. Duty is ours. Results are God’s.
In liberty,
Brett
