Brett's Blog: Monday, August 29, 2022 - It Is More Than a Convention

Published in Blog on August 29, 2022 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

Last week, I had a couple of conversations with volunteers who essentially asked the same question. “I’m committed,” they said. “But I want to be more involved. And since we’re a passed state, I’m not sure what to do. When other people ask me how they can be more involved, what should I tell them?” This is a great question and it's something we should address more often.

Holding the first of many Article V convention of states meetings is an obvious goal. But we also need to remember our representative government requires us to be self-governing citizens. Our parent organization, Citizens for Self-Governance, is where our ultimate purpose is found.

Complacency is a major cause of the issues we have today with our government and society. Far too many of us have not been involved in the political process as self-governing citizens. We don’t attend school board and city council meetings. We don’t serve on committees in our communities to lead and express our opinions. It’s time to get involved at the local level. How many of us have worked to recruit candidates to run for local or state offices? How many of us have considered running ourselves?

I understand life is busy. One lesson my mother taught me was you’ll make time for the things you truly care about, and she was correct. If lockdowns, mandates, teaching our kids to hate each other and our country, election issues, the weaponization of federal agencies or runaway inflation doesn’t have you ready to act then I’m not sure what it will take. My guess is at least a couple items on this list hit home with you. It’s likely the larger problem is figuring out where to start.

What is the Convention of States Project doing and are we moving the needle? Let’s look at some examples of where our efforts have had an impact.

This has been a good year for COS. We’ve passed our resolution in four states and made significant progress in numerous others. It’s disappointing we didn’t pass the resolution in Pennsylvania and North Carolina this year. But that comes down to relationships and making it politically unwise for legislators to go back on their word. For example, in Texas the Speaker of the House was a perennial roadblock for us despite overwhelming support in the Assembly. So, our Texas grassroots team worked hard and the Speaker lost his re-election bid. The following year our resolution passed the Texas Legislature.

In local school board elections, we often organize ‘get out the vote’ efforts in select districts. This is determined by our grassroots State Teams in consultation with National Staff.  School Boards in Houston, Texas, St. Louis and Springfield, Mo., had board members who supported mandates and teaching Critical Race Theory to our kids. These districts also had limited government, pro-Constitution candidates running to unseat these incumbent board members. Through the Convention of States Project’s ‘get out the vote efforts’, two seats on each of these school boards were flipped.

COS continues to increase involvement in the primary and general elections. To be clear, we do not work on behalf of any candidate or political party. We simply make sure our supporters get to the polls and make a difference. These are items discussed during our state meetings and digital media.

A couple years ago, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) proposed a rule where during a state of emergency declared by the Governor, the Director of the DHSS could close any public venue or private business in the interest of ‘public health.’ Additionally, only that person could rescind the order allowing the business, church or other public place to reopen. This is clearly unconstitutional and immoral. We responded by activating our Missouri grassroots team and within 36 hours the DHSS received 1,700 calls in opposition to this rule. The result – DHSS withdrew the order within 48 hours of our action.

Here are a few other ways you can be more involved.

Stay up-to-speed by attending COSP co-founder Mark Meckler’s Battle Cry on our Facebook page every Sunday night at 8 p.m. We also have a Facebook Live event Tuesdays at 5 p.m. Missouri holds a statewide call every other Monday at 8 p.m. Our next one will be this evening. If you are a volunteer leader, we have specific nationwide calls for you on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday nights. These calls provide specific training for you to succeed in your chosen role.

It’s become common practice for government officials to make decisions they don’t have the authority to make. They will not hand back this authority unless We The People demand it. With a nationwide grassroots network of more than 5.4 million supporters, credibility in state legislatures across the country and an average of 1,000 new supporters every day, the Convention of States Project is the best vehicle to return decision making to where it belongs. The only way our government will stay in its lane is through every self-governing citizen doing what they can to hold government accountable. Make the commitment to become more involved. The future of our country depends on it.

In liberty,

Brett
