Brett's Blog: Monday, August 26, 2024: Freedom is Only One Generation Away…….

Published in Blog on August 25, 2024 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

The Framers are lauded as being geniuses and some almost deify them. This is understandable as they formed the freest, most successful nation in world history that has endured for nearly 250 years. Their efforts were guided by our almighty Creator there is no doubt. They still needed eyes to see and ears to hear. They needed to have a mindset that would enable them to draft a Constitution based upon the principles our Founding Fathers established in the Declaration of Independence. They needed a liberty mindset.

The Framers had this state of mind because they were experiencing tyranny firsthand. Since arriving in the New World, the colonists had been British subjects. They enjoyed the same rights and privileges as their fellow countrymen back in England. Slowly, King George III began to revoke these rights and subject the colonists to greater oppression. The fragility of liberty was fresh on the soon to be American’s minds because they were living it out in real-time.

We are several generations removed from the tyranny of the British Crown. There has been a slow march in the expansion of government power for 100 plus years. We have allowed this tyranny to slowly progress. The old analogy of a frog and a boiling pot of water is descriptive of how this has occurred. If you place a frog into a pot of boiling water, the frog will immediately jump out to escape certain death. However, if you place a frog in a pot of water at room temperature and slowly increase the heat to the boiling point, the frog will not notice the gradual change and boil to death.

We are the frog in the room-temperature pot of water. The heat has slowly increased. We have largely been unresponsive to these changes. Where our founding generation faced a direct threat to their existence, we are much more comfortable. Perhaps, too comfortable. We have greater mobility, satellite television, a cell phone, Wi-Fi, Netflix, etc. Life is pretty comfy. For now.

We recently experienced conditions similar to what our founding generation did. During the Wuhan pandemic in 2020 to 2022, governments throughout the world took unprecedented actions to expand their power. Local and state governments following the recommendations of the federal government shut down businesses, restricted individual mobility, violated our free exercise of religion and attempted to force individuals to inject themselves with an experimental medical treatment. Instead of demanding justice, our society has moved on. This is unconscionable to me.

The people who made these decisions should be put on trial for their lives for crimes against humanity. in my opinion. I want to share a personal experience with you. This occurred in August of 2020. This memory popped up on my Facebook page just after a story about a supposed increase in Covid cases. (Funny how this virus seems to intensify in presidential election years)

In reading the following story, I would like you to think about the constitutional recourse we the people have to push back government overreach like this. While the most draconian government actions occurred in political subdivisions controlled by Democrats, there were plenty of Republican government officials who acted in completely unconstitutional ways. This is precisely why The Framers unanimously added the convention of states process in Article V of the Constitution. If we are serious about restoring our republic, we should have the courage and conviction to invoke this solution.

This story is from August 22, 2020:

Four weeks ago, I had a family member who had to go to the hospital. They were ambulatory so, they were taken straight to the ER at 1pm. Understanding the hospital did allow visitors, I went to the ER. 1) Because I was obviously concerned. 2) Because I am usually the one to communicate health information and answer questions the medical team has.

Well, the visitation policy did not apply to the ER so, no entrada. Fortunately, the ER staff was great. They called me and I was able to provide most of the answers I would have in person. What I could not do was comfort my family member who was surely worried.

Fast forward to Tuesday morning 10am. My family member is still in the ER. There were no beds available in the hospital for them. They were sending them to the “step-down” unit which is a care level between the ICU and floor. There is an entire floor of these rooms. All were full. They were transferred temporarily to a respiratory unit at 10am. Still no visitors.

The nurse called me to go through the admittance questions. I asked what the issues were with not getting a room for so long. She said the hospital was packed. I asked if that was due to Wuhan China Virus patients (I called it COVID-19 so as not to offend). She said no. She had initially trained for the hospital’s COVID unit but, they’ve never had enough patients there to use her. Interesting.

Finally, at about 3pm, we’re assigned a room in the step-down unit. This is in the main hospital with visitation privileges. One person per day can visit either between 11a-1p or 4p-6p. I’m there at 4pm sharp.

As I went through the questions and temperature check to enter the hospital, I had a conversation with the staff. I asked them what the reasons were for the hospital being so full.

I was told 4 more times it was due to COVID. Not because of positive patients though. Because people had been “scared” (their words) to go to the hospital the past couple months when they should have. As a result, more patients are in much worse condition than they would have been otherwise. Now, they require more care and longer time in the hospital to be well enough to go home. They also have higher fatality rates. Not due to patients being positive. Because they were fearful about coming to the hospital when they should have and otherwise would have due to the Wuhan China Virus.

I wonder how many more people would be alive if it weren’t for the 24-hour hysteria the media was beating into our heads? Suicide rates are up. Overdose rates are up. Domestic abuse incidents are up. Why aren’t those statistics as well publicized as deaths related to the virus? Why aren’t those statistics considered when a mayor calls for a Governor to issue a statewide mask mandate?

Current stats in Greene County Missouri are:

Confirmed cases: 1,286

Confirmed deaths: 10

Cases requiring hospitalization: 70

Greene County population: 296,131

Yes, the virus is real. Just like every other virus in existence.

Yes, we should take prudent precautions. Just like we do with every other virus in existence.

Yes, any loss of life is tragic. Especially, for those directly involved.

It is completely reasonable to question why our response to this virus has been far more exaggerated than responses to any other virus. Politics, media and society have made us far more cynical. It is completely reasonable to conclude the response to this virus has political motivations.

Wear a mask if you choose.

Stay inside if you choose.

Absolutely, practice proper hygiene.

If you’re sick, stay home and away from people.

Take additional precautions if you are immunocompromised or have other risk factors.

You know. Just as with every other airborne virus.

My family member is doing better. They were in the hospital for 1 week and are now back in a care facility.

They were and are still negative.
