You have probably heard the talking heads on mainstream media condemning the people who do not bother to vote. They live their tidy and well-funded lives with no concept of how busy most Americans really are. The only real time when most of us have to dedicate to voting is in November when the vacations are over and the kids are back in school.
I live in a second-ring city in the Greater St Louis Metropolitan Area and only about 20% of our registered voters show up for the general elections involving bond issues and local candidates. Sometimes we see a little more activity in the primaries, which take place every other year, but not by much.
But that's OK! There are those of us who don't mind taking the time to research candidates and issues. On the big day, we put on some make up or aftershave, as the case may be, and off to the polls we go. It doesn't take long and most of our neighbors who work the polls are really pleasant people.
When four people in my city stay home and I go vote, then my vote carries more weight. It's a trade-off that I am quite willing to take part in! So, on behalf of the people who are willing to make the effort to do research and take the time to vote, thank you for not voting. Don't worry - we got you covered.
