This was a quote from John Quincy Adams. You may know Adams as our 6th President. What many do not know is after leaving the presidency in 1829, Adams returned to the House of Representatives. He served in the House a total of 12 terms until his death in 1849. Adams was a fierce abolitionist serving in a Democrat Party-controlled, pro-slavery legislature. Adams would passionately lobby for the end of slavery so often, the House passed a rule to bar him from bringing up the subject on the House floor. When asked why he continued to push for legislation he knew would never pass, Adams said, “Duty is ours. Results are God’s.”
Adams never saw the abolition of slavery in his lifetime. However, he was a strong influence on a young legislator who briefly served alongside Adams before his death. This legislator would have a profound effect on history and as a powerful champion for justice. This legislator would ascend to the Presidency in 1861 and achieve Adams’ lifelong goal. This young legislator would eventually become President Abraham Lincoln.
Adams and Lincoln understood when they took an oath to “defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic” that oath lasts a lifetime.
Today we honor all the brave patriots who served to protect and defend the Constitution and gave their lives in that pursuit. This is a debt we can never fully repay. What we can do is our part to soldier on in the memory and spirit of our fallen heroes. We do not serve on the battlefields of Anzio, Guadalcanal, Hanoi or Mosul. We serve on the political battlefield armed with truth, the Constitution and The Framers' solution to an unconstitutional federal government.
The veterans in our volunteer team have a saying. “I took an oath that never expires.” They continue to march on in state capitals and across the country. No longer under immediate threat of enemy gunfire, they endure hostile threats to our way of life, nonetheless. Our Constitution is under as much an assault now as any time in our history. The attacks come from within through indoctrination in our schools, the perversion of pop culture and a biased media. The enemy is committed. We must be more so.
On this Memorial Day, let us remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our republic and the Constitution. They handed the torch to future generations to continue to soldier on. May God continue to provide us guidance and courage to honor our fallen heroes and save our republic.
In liberty,
Brett
