Brett's Blog: Monday, April 29, 2024: Why Convention of States Action?

Published in Blog on April 28, 2024 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

President Ronald Reagan once asked, “Are you better off now than four years ago?’

Well, I’ve thought about this question recently and it brings me back to the time I began volunteering for the Convention of States Project in the spring of 2014.

I first learned in the summer of 2013 about the state-led method of proposing Constitutional Amendments. Like you, I had become frustrated with the political process. Being a bit of a policy wonk, I considered myself informed and politically engaged. I did my homework on the issues and candidates so I could make an informed decision come election time. Yet no matter how diligent I’d been, my vote seemed to have little effect.

Government continued to grow. Individual liberty continued to decline. Our voices were largely unheard in DC. It had become apparent that neither party represented the interests and concerns of a majority in this country. And the Constitution??? At best it was an afterthought in DC.

Enter Article V and the convention of states process. My first reaction was, “How can this be? I’ve read the Constitution and studied it, and I’ve never heard of this! Can this be real? Is employing Article V safe?”

Well, like you I did look. It was and is real. Could this be the solution that has been hiding in plain sight for over 230 years? The answer is “Yes!” This is The Framers’ gift to us to restrain an out of control federal government.

I have wholeheartedly endorsed the Convention of States Project. I serve on its Legal Board of Reference because they propose a solution as big as the problem. And they are promoting state applications for a convention for the purpose of limiting the scope, power and jurisdiction of the federal government. And that’s what needs to be done. – Mark Levin

Ten years have passed since I began volunteering for Convention of States Action. So many things have changed with our organization. These are some of our milestones:

  • Our Article V resolution has passed in 19 states. Our resolution has been introduced in 49 states.
  • We currently have over 5.4 million supporters, more than 2.5 million petition signers and nearly 250,000 volunteers.
  • A majority of Republicans, Democrats and Independents support using the convention of states process to rein in the federal government.
  • Most nationally known constitutionalists are supporters or public endorsers of our organization.
  • Convention of States Action is featured in national or local media several times every week.
  • Awareness of Article V and Convention of States Action has dramatically increased due to our grassroots efforts.

Each day, we have more and more evidence that the federal government is unable and incapable of reforming itself. We are where we are because we have not used the convention of states process before. This is something The Framers knew would happen sooner or later. History has shown that every central government gradually accumulates more and more power and authority. The result is less and less freedom for the people.

Fortunately, we were provided with the ability for We The People, working through our state legislatures, to oversee the federal government. That tool is the convention of states process.

Several organizations currently are working to push back against federal overreach. They are working on school reform, election reform, pro-life issues, public policy issues and more. These are all noble efforts and areas the grassroots needs to address. They are all the result of federal government overreach. And yet, there is only one peaceful and constitutional solution to address these issues. That is the Article V convention of states process. There is only one national organization with the infrastructure and strategy to adequately address the issues the federal government has caused and to restore the Constitution. That organization is Convention of States Action.

Go to our Resources Page to learn more or contact one of our leaders. If you agree that DC will never voluntarily return decision making to the states, please volunteer and take an active role to save our Constitution.

In liberty,

Brett
