Brett's Blog: Monday, April 24, 2023: Living in Nefarious Times

Published in Blog on April 23, 2023 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

Most of us are disgusted with the current state of our nation. Many of us have been very concerned with the path America has been on for some time. It’s normal to have discussions about the proper role of government, tax and fiscal policy. A trademark of a healthy country is having this free and open debate within the arena of ideas. This leads to the best policies coming to the forefront and continued prosperity.

This is not what is occurring now. This has been a slow march away from our Judeo-Christian Founding Principles. Many of the issues we’re confronted with today do not benefit any constituent group. In fact, we’ve devalued life itself down to a “choice.” We’ve slowly become a less religious people and hammered home that ‘this life’ is all we have. The result has been a nihilistic society without a soul. Chemical castration and genital mutilation of children is actively promoted. I have to admit that I did not have drag queen story hour on my Bingo card.

The traditional, conservative point of view of “live and let live” no longer applies. We can no longer be the “silent majority.” By not engaging adequately in the culture war, we have allowed insanity to control debate. Make no mistake, this is not a war of ideas. This is a war between good and evil.  That is a difficult fact to accept.

There currently is a movie in theaters that puts all of this in focus. “Nefarious” was produced by the folks at Believe Entertainment. They are the producers of “Unplanned” and “God is Not Dead.” “Nefarious” is based on the book, “A Nefarious Plot,” written by Convention of States endorser and champion Steve Deace. Do not worry. There are no spoilers coming.

This book was published seven years ago. It’s written in the first person by a demon named Nefarious. The book reads as Satan’s plan to destroy the human race. I recently picked up the book, and it reads like a prophecy of exactly what is occurring today. The movie “Nefarious” is the prequel to the book. There are references and even dialogue taken verbatim from the book. Reading the book will help connect parts of the movie but it will not spoil it.

“Nefarious” is a faith-based film that takes on the secular worldview head on and destroys it. There is a scene in the first third of the movie that gives a much-needed backhand to the Church. Too many pastors have focused on comfort and failed to provide their congregations with the spiritual nourishment that is needed.

Nefarious claims to inhabit a man named Edward. Edward is played by Sean Patrick Flanery of “Boondock Saints” and several other films. Edward is a convicted mass murderer scheduled for execution that evening. James (played by Jordan Belfi) is a psychiatrist whose task is to determine if Edward is sane and able to be executed. The chemistry between the two is magical. Flanery delivers an Oscar-level performance. The story is phenomenal and the cinematography is first-rate. There are no cheesy conversion scenes. “Nefarious” does not let you off that easy.

If you’ve seen the trailer, you may be apprehensive about seeing the movie. You may be concerned about the R-rating the MPAA gave it. This is not a traditional horror movie or slasher film. I would call it a psychological thriller. By the content and storytelling in the film, there is no reason it should have been given an R-rating. I think the only reason for that rating is due to the faith-based background of the movie’s producers.

“Nefarious” will give believers plenty to think about. It will confront non-believers to examine their worldview as well. If you have a friend or family member you’ve been struggling to have a spiritual conversation with, “Nefarious” may set the table where that conversation is possible. Grab a bite to eat. Go out for coffee or ice cream and talk afterward. I encourage you to organize a group from your church to see it as well.

I have one word of caution. Skip the trailers prior to the movie. The decision of what trailers to show prior to the feature presentation is up to the theater’s corporate office. The trailers before my viewing of “Nefarious" were some of the most vile, disgusting, profane things I’ve ever seen on the big screen or television.

For more information and to see the trailer, go to www.whoisnefarious.com. For a list of theaters showing “Nefarious" in your area and showtimes, go to www.nefarioustickets.com. Since this is not produced by a Hollywood studio, there are a limited number of theaters and screens. Where most films open in 2,000 to 3,000 theaters, “Nefarious" is being shown on fewer than 1,000 screens. I think you will be happy you went.

In liberty,

Brett
