This weekend we celebrate the Easter holiday. Many people make the mistake that Christmas (the celebration of Jesus’ birth) is the most important Christian holiday. That is not the case. It is the act of ultimate love with God’s only son giving his life for our sins and then rising from the dead on the third day that is the holiest of celebrations. It is this sacrifice and the subsequent triumph over death that gives Christianity its meaning.
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday. This day commemorates the day Jesus returned to Jerusalem as Savior. A massive crowd praised Jesus as King and laid palm branches across the road as he rode in on a donkey. As the accolades rained down, Jesus knew these same people would soon turn against him. This was the beginning of the march to the cross.
Maundy Thursday is recognized as the day Jesus had The Last Supper with his disciples. This was the first time when communion was offered. The breaking of bread symbolized the coming torture Jesus’ body would soon endure. The bread was then washed down with wine which symbolized the spilling of Jesus’ blood as he would be tortured. In the most profound example of servant leadership, Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. This demonstrated ultimate love and humility. Jesus then instructed the disciples to go and serve others. He also stated that one of his disciples would soon betray him.
Good Friday was Jesus’ final day on earth prior to the Resurrection. As predicted, his disciple. Judas. betrayed Jesus. Jesus was arrested, placed on trial and convicted to death by crucifixion. He was beaten to the point where his body was broken just as the bread was the night before. He was mocked and a crown of thorns was placed on his head digging into his skull. Jesus was made to carry his own cross to the point where he’d be nailed to it to die. Two prisoners were crucified alongside Jesus. One of the criminals cursed and mocked Jesus. The other looked upon him and said, “Surely you are the Son of God.” Jesus told the thief he would be welcomed into Heaven and have everlasting life. Even in that moment of agony, Jesus showed mercy. After Christ died, he was removed from the cross and placed in a tomb. A large stone sealed the entrance of the tomb.
On Easter Sunday, Mary Magdelene and other women returned to the tomb. When they arrived, they saw the large stone had been moved from the door. An angel appeared and told the women, “He is not here. He is risen., just as he said.” The women rushed to find the remaining eleven disciples to tell them the news. They went to the tomb to see for themselves. It was at that time the prophecy was fulfilled.
Our nation is in a state of pain and suffering. We are in need of God’s mercy yet, we are undeserving of it. The good news for us is that we can still be given that mercy even though we do not deserve it. We are in need of a political and spiritual revival. I firmly believe that the Convention of States Project can be the catalyst to bring about that change. Each of us are here on purpose. Each of us are here at this time for a specific reason. If we humble ourselves, ask for guidance and be servant leaders, we can realize that moment of revival. I do not believe God is finished with America yet. Let us pray for redemption and strive for revival. Have a blessed Easter weekend.
In liberty,
Brett
