Brett's Blog: Monday, March 25, 2024: A ‘March Madness’ Roundup

Published in Blog on March 24, 2024 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

There’s always something going on in Convention of States Land. Some months have more action than others. A rundown of noteworthy developments follows a reminder of a pressing issue in Missouri.

Many parts of Missouri have local elections on April 2nd. There are elections for school boards, health boards, library boards, city and county officials and bond issues. The minimum level of involvement for a self-governing citizen is to vote.

We should know the madness that’s occurring in almost every school district to some extent. The Hazelwood MO School District is under investigation by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey for a vicious fight between two high school girls a couple weeks ago. This could have resulted in one girl losing her life if the other hadn’t been restrained. The Hazelwood School District has a history of indoctrinating students to be social justice warriors through the teaching of the Critical Race Theory and DEI (Division, Exclusion and Indoctrination) agendas. This fight did not take place on school grounds, but it still bears a connection with the school.

Library boards determine the books and other resources housed in our taxpayer-funded library system. There are age-inappropriate materials in most school and public libraries. I am not referring to National Geographic and books on physiology. These are books that teach radical gender ideology and expose children to sexually explicit pictures and descriptions. Last week I was in the library of a community south of Springfield. This is a conservative part of the Bible Belt where the community is involved. There were several age-inappropriate books on 4-foot-high shelves. That’s about the right height for 8- or 9-year-olds to easily see..

Just four years ago, many health departments issued orders to close churches, parks, schools and private businesses. They issued masking requirements and even set up hotlines where people could report if their neighbors were outside without wearing a mask. The tyranny we were subjected to was shocking. What was even more shocking is how many people went along with it and that no one was held accountable.

To date, nearly 68,000 Missourians have signed our Convention of States petition. Municipal elections usually have a low voter turnout. So if we turn out at the polls April 2nd, we have the ability to affect these elections. Already, early voting has begun – typically done at your County Clerk’s office or election center. Your area may have additional accommodations, but if you plan on voting on election day, make sure you know where your precinct is located and vote according to your values.

Our Convention of States Action Teams have been running at full speed all across our country. Here’s a brief rundown of notable events in five states over the past couple weeks:

  • On March 20, our COSA resolution was heard in the Hawaii Senate Committee on Public Safety, Intergovernmental and Military Affairs. It passed with a unanimous vote. The next stop is the Senate Floor. We still have to move in the House. This was the first Senate Committee hearing we’ve ever received in Hawaii.
  • Georgia has been supporting three election integrity bills and a school choice bill. Yesterday, the school choice bill passed a concurrence vote in the Senate and is headed to Gov. Brian Kemp's desk for his signature. Two of the three election integrity bills (already passed in the House) were reported favorably yesterday by the Senate committee and will be headed to the Senate floor for a vote.
  • Tennessee has been monitoring a parental rights bill that has passed the Senate and received a favorable committee vote in the House.
  • The Oklahoma Team is supporting an election integrity bill to ban ranked choice voting. The bill has passed the House and is awaiting a committee hearing in the Senate.
  • Louisiana is working on a bill that keeps the federal government out of state elections. Another priority bill addresses the regular cleanup of voter rolls to protect against voter fraud. Both bills passed out of committee last week.

These are just a few of the happenings across the country. In Missouri, our Team continues work on moving our Commissioner Selection Bill through the Missouri Legislature. Convention of States Action – it’s more than just a convention!
