Brett's Blog: Monday, January 30, 2023 - Ask Not What Your Country Can Do for You, Part Four – The State Communications Coordinator

Published in Blog on January 29, 2023 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

I received my bachelor’s degree in marketing and management in 1992. Four years later, when I decided to pursue my MBA in marketing and finance, I discovered the world had been transformed. In our macroeconomics class, we’d been assigned our first paper. As I always had, I sat down and outlined how I planned to construct my paper. The plan was to move from point to point to support my thesis. I even assembled a list of viable references I'd cite to accomplish this. In fact, I felt very good about my plan. So, off to the library!

But, wait. I didn’t need to go to the library anymore. Every book, journal and white paper was right here at my fingertips. I could use the Internet now. Gone were the days of paper books, microfilm, microfiche and Lexis/Nexis searches. In four short years, the methods of research – including accessing, gathering and assessing information – had changed. This was a whole new world.

We live in an age of instant information. We can access the Library of Congress, Yale or Oxford University from our home or smartphone. Literally any book ever written and scanned into digital form is available on demand. We just need the correct URL, search terms and maybe a subscription here or there.

In Missouri, we presently are in the midst of the 2023 Legislative Session, and all across the country there’s Convention of States action going on. Our COS resolution already has made it through a Montana House Committee. Last week, our resolution was heard in a New Hampshire House Committee. This week, we have a committee hearing in Wyoming, a COS rally in Idaho and the New Hampshire House Committee will vote on our resolution. Last week, the Convention of States Project was the topic on Breitbart News and on Fox Nation’s Tucker Carlson Today. These are just the items I can think of off the top of my head. There’s something COS-related happening in every state, every week and every day.

Delivering this information is the role of the Communications Team. Our National Communications Team helps provide detailed and accurate information to the national news media, and supports our State Communications Team. In fact, much of the information disseminated by the National Team actually originates at the state level. It’s the job of our State Communications Team to gather, draft and disseminate pertinent Missouri COS information to our members and prospective members. This includes anything from news about state events and committee hearings, to calls for action, directing letter writing campaigns, writing emails and text blasts and maintaining social media accounts. Even delivering this blog to you is performed by our State Communications Team under the coordination of the State Communications Coordinator.

This is a dynamic and exciting team. It’s also critical to our success. So, making sure our grassroots is informed and has timely actionable information is a must. This also keeps our team of volunteers on the same page and at their most productive. The Media Liaison role falls within the State Communications Team. It takes effort to arrange interviews and media appearances; to place articles in newspapers and online platforms, and to promote COS events.

If you have a background in journalism, media or communications, the State Communications Team might be a great fit for you. If this sounds interesting to you, click here to apply for the Communications Team. One of our volunteers will reach out and walk you through our on-boarding process. We will do all we can to help you find the best fit and be an effective self-governing citizen activist.

In liberty,

Brett
