One of my favorite days of the legislative session is our annual Surge Day. We plan this event relatively early in the year. When we are advancing legislation, we want to provide extra encouragement to our legislators to act as soon as possible. The legislative calendar fills up quickly. Even though the session lasts four months, the end will be here before you know it. The easiest excuse House or Senate Leadership has for not passing bills is, “Sorry. We just ran out of time.” This year’s Surge Day will be held on February 7th. The weather forecast looks to be cooperative as of now.
The purpose of Surge Day is to interact with our legislators, distribute our surge packets and fellowship with each other. An emphasis is placed on each volunteer meeting with their Representative, Senator and their staff. We also go to the gallery in each chamber to watch the floor debate. We call this, “seeing how your state government works (or doesn’t work.)” We break out into teams to distribute a packet to every legislator. We have 163 Representatives and 34 Senators so this is a big group activity. It is also a lot of fun!
We have a “Home Base” on the 3rd Floor of the Capitol Rotunda. We have tables and chairs set up where we interact with the public, legislators and staff. We will have lots of print material available to educate visitors. This year’s surge packets will contain a handy bookmark linking to several COSA resources. We will also have a press release of the national endorsement we received from The Heritage Foundation.
Did I mention we will have dozens of the best glazed doughnuts in Jefferson City from Schulte’s Market?
If you want to be part of this activity, there is more information below. This is a great time for fellowship, education and being a self-governing citizen. I can promise you that it will be time well spent.
If you haven’t been to the Capitol, I highly encourage you to place that on your “to-do” list. Capitol Surge Day is a great time to check this off your list. Rush Limbaugh used to describe, “ordinary people achieving extraordinary things.” This is an example of what he referred to. We will have experienced volunteers available to assist you and make sure this is a great experience. I look forward to seeing you at the Capitol!!
In liberty,
Brett
