Brett's Blog Archive - Monday, October 18, 2021: Keep Your Eye on the Prize

Published in Blog on October 22, 2021 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

Life is complicated. No news there.

Just a couple generations ago:

  • We only had 3 television channels to choose from.
  • The news was on at 6 and 10.
  • CDs and DVDs weren’t a thing yet.
  • You went to the library to do research for a school assignment.
  • Speaking with someone across the country or across the world was an expensive phone call.
  • It could take a week for someone to receive a letter from you.

There is no question we’ve been blessed by the advances of technology and the development of modern conveniences.

  • We have hundreds of television channels from which to choose.
  • News is on-demand.
  • What’s a CD?
  • Millions of reference materials are available at our fingertips.
  • We can have thousands of virtual friends across the globe.
  • Messaging is instantaneous.

These technological advances and increased complexity can be overwhelming at times. It’s a challenge to process all this information and make decisions. Finding accurate, reliable news is becoming increasingly difficult. And, this is where a solid foundation in our fundamental principles is critical.

There currently are many hot button issues. There is the aggressive move of Critical Race Theory in our school systems. We have ‘woke’ school boards with protesting parents being labeled as domestic terrorists. The President, governors, city councils and mayors are enacting mask and vaccine mandates. Our society is being re-segregated between those who’ve chosen to be vaccinated and those who have not. Oh, and there’s the issue of free and fair elections as well.

There is a common thread in all these issues – the federal government is meddling where it has no authority.

Those who ignore or trash our Constitution and advocate for a tyrannical government want us to be distracted. They are trying to overload our civil society to spread our opposition so thin to the point of being ineffective. Meanwhile, their statist agenda marches on. We cannot allow this to happen.

It takes self-governing citizens to push back against these un-American initiatives. Building that army of self-governing citizen activists is our mission in the Convention of States Project. And where appropriate, our volunteers are pushing back against this un-American agenda and succeeding.

Dr. Tom Coburn spoke of treating the cause instead of the symptoms. Given that the cause of these issues is a rejection of our Constitutional principles, we should look to the solutions The Framers provided to us in their instruction manual. When the government is operating outside of its enumerated powers, We The People must work through our State Legislators to initiate a reset. That solution is the convention of states process.

So, what can we do RIGHT NOW?

Many of our friends and neighbors are looking for a solution to this madness. They are paying attention and they are thirsty for an answer. So now is the time to aggressively promote the COS solution! Here’s how:

  • We engage in conversations within our circle of friends.
  • We identify area events and opportunities, and arrange to have a COS information booth at these events.
  • We contact our legislators to answer questions about COS and to be their support system when they do the right thing.
  • We become involved locally to support pro-liberty, pro-Constitution candidates to run for office. And in some instances, we answer the call and become one of those candidates.

The Framers gave us the most consequential governing document and provided the solution to restore it when necessary. That time is now and It’s up to us to act. Some of what we must do will be monotonous. Some of what we do will be tedious. That’s the way the work is. Doing what we must do now can bring about a glorious victory. Don’t we owe it to those who sacrificed for us to pay it forward?
