We had a bit of a difficult day last week and ate a bit late. I ran by Freddy’s to grab a bite to eat. They had six or seven cars in the drive thru so I went inside. There were five tables full and a couple people in line. Like most businesses nowadays, they were short staffed. One person at the register, one running the drive thru, two people fixing the food and one person at the custard machine. It took longer than usual to receive my food but it wasn’t a problem.
The staff apologized a couple times for the wait. I told them it wasn’t a problem. When they called my order number, I went over to grab my food. Both cooks apologized for the wait again. I told them not to worry about it and said, “Thank you for coming to work.” One of the kid’s eyes lit up and he said, “Thank you. You have a nice night, sir.” I told him to do the same and left.
How many people have yelled at him or been rude to him over the past year? Especially this year! Just a couple of kind words had such a big impact on him.
The federal government has completely disconnected work from earning a living. A place to live, needing to eat, wanting a car, a phone and other necessities has always been an incentive to work. No work. No money. No stuff. Well, not anymore.
Multiple stimulus payments, supplemental unemployment insurance, grants and other government programs have taken the place of gainful employment for many people. Companies are raising wages, offering flexible shifts and other perks just to attract workers.
I saw a billboard for a grocery supply warehouse a few days ago. They were offering 4, 6 and 8 hour shifts to try to staff adequately. The message is, “If you will work, tell us what schedule you want and how much you want to be paid and we will figure it out.” Businesses like these still cannot hire enough staff for their businesses.
I called a popular local restaurant to grab a carry out order. I expected a bit of a wait and it’s about a 15 minute drive from my house so I called in my order when I left the house. It should have been a signal when they put me on a 10 minute hold. When they picked back up, I told the young man I’d like to place a carry out order. He said absolutely but, it would be about an hour wait and asked if that would be a problem. I told him, “Yes” and thanked him for letting me know.
These are all first-world problems, I know. They are an indication of us becoming a third-world country. Will it get to that point? Probably not. This is a consequence of a federal government that is operating outside its Constitutional authority. Congress is not going to fix the problems they have created.
Fortunately, The Framers provided us a solution in Article V of the Constitution. This gives We The People the ability to place the federal government back into their constitutional box. It’s our responsibility to grow our grassroots team and hold our state legislators accountable to their Constitutional responsibilities. Thank you for being here. Let’s get to work.
In liberty,
Brett
