Independence Day is upon us.
Summer is here; school is out. We are venturing out on vacations again. Parents are taking their families on college visits. In short, society is beginning to live life again.
We have been inundated with news, stress, and family challenges in addition to our normal, day-to-day responsibilities. We must take time to unplug to give our minds and hearts time to rest and recover. I want to encourage you to do this. We cannot sit back on our laurels too long, though. We are in a battle for our republic and honestly, we have been losing ground for decades.
The good news is we are still a freedom-loving country. No other country in history provides more opportunity, more mobility, more compassion, more charity, more justice, more prosperity or more innovation than the United States. A by-product of the glorious benefits of our society is complacency. This is not anything to be ashamed of; this is human nature. It is something to be mindful of though.
As Admiral Yamamoto stated after the Japanese Empire attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant.” This is what is happening as we speak. Whether it be the cancel culture, Critical Race Theory, the 1619 Project, lockdowns or the continuing expansion of government, millions of freedom-loving, self-governing citizens have chosen to stand up, speak up and show up. We are doing this in our communities, school board meetings, city council meetings and yes, for the Convention of States Project. This is what it means to be a self-governing citizen.
The reaction by pop culture, much of the media and advocates for oppressive government is instructive. As my dad used to say: “They are coming unglued!” Dare to push back against these movements and in comes the name-calling, the claims that “you cannot possibly understand” or that “you are just imagining things.” Rarely is the substance of your rebuttal ever addressed. Why? Because if we base our arguments on the truth, we cannot be defeated on the merits of them.

“To penetrate and dissipate these clouds of darkness, the general mind must be strengthened by education” – Thomas Jefferson
This quote is right on target. It is what attracted me to the Convention of States Project in the first place. Much of the scholarship on the Resource pages of our website are linked to original writings. The references to the Constitution, The Federalist Papers, Madison’s Notes to the 1787 Convention, and even the State Ratification Debates are each worthy of a deeper dive. There is so much to learn of our history and it is truly fascinating. It is important to learn the good, bad and the ugly parts of our past, but material should always be accurate and based in the truth.
About one-third of colonists supported the American Revolution. One-third supported the British Crown and one-third just wanted to be left alone to farm and raise their families. It does not take a majority to move public opinion, but a committed minority working tirelessly.
That is why you are here. We have assembled as a team and are continuing to grow. Americans are thirsty for the truth and a solution to the unconstitutional government we face. Thank you for being part of the Convention of States family. As you recharge this summer, remember the very freedom we enjoy is under assault. It has taken decades for us to arrive at this point. It will take more than a month, a year, maybe a decade to recover.
Self-governance is a never-ending process. We can and will stay committed to our Founding Principles, eternal truths and the Constitution. Go to www.conventionofstates.com for more information. Have a safe and appreciative Independence Day holiday.
In liberty,
Brett
