We often discuss defending the Constitution and the founding principles of our republic. This is the mission of a self-governing citizen. What are these principles anyway? More importantly, what is the origin of these principles? 

Secular regressives claim many of the Framers were Deists. They believed in Nature’s God, but this did not equate to adoption of Judeo-Christian principles and reverence to the Bible. Our founding generation would disagree with this. 

The Founders understood that the acknowledgement of a Creator is a prerequisite of limited government. If man were placed at the top of the food chain, the power of government could be whatever man decreed it to be. Additionally, man would have the ability to determine which rights each person had, when they could exercise them and when they could be taken away. This view is more in line with the values of the French Revolution than the American Revolution. 

The Declaration of Independence states we are all subjugated to the Creator. Moreover, the Creator gives every person rights that man cannot take away. The Declaration of Independence calls these the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God. They are called this because these rights are common throughout nature. These rights are:

  • Self-defense – Every animal in nature will act to protect its family, its possessions and itself.
  • Liberty – Nowhere in nature is one animal enslaved by another.
  • Property – Bring a new pet home, let them walk your yard, and you will understand.
  • Accumulation and Profit – Every animal has the right to use its talent and effort to acquire property.
  • Association – Every being in the animal kingdom can spend time with whomever they wish. The cows can hang with the horses, pigs, goats, or whomever they’d like.

Each of these rights apply to human beings, as well. They are not up for a vote. It does not matter if your neighbor thinks this is correct. It doesn’t matter if the government believes you should have these rights. These are given from God, and man has no say.

Now, if you commit offenses that violate the rights of others, there are consequences for those actions. Your rights may be affected. That is part of membership in a civil society. That decision is still within your control.
