Brett's Blog Archive - Monday, April 26, 2021: Down the Stretch They Come!

Published in Blog on May 02, 2021 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

We will hear that said during the Kentucky Derby this Saturday. We can say it right now when speaking of the 2021 Regular Session of the 101st Legislature. Today marks three weeks until the end of the session on May 14.

The legislative calendar has been full this session since not much was accomplished in 2020. Convention of States is front and center as the session draws to a close.

We have made significant progress over the past week. Just a week ago, our Convention of States legislation sat in the Senate waiting to be placed on the legislative calendar. That must happen before legislation can be brought to the floor for debate and a vote.

We asked our great grassroots team to provide a little encouragement to Senate leadership, and you responded. Our COS resolution and Commissioner Selection Bill were placed on the Senate calendar Wednesday morning. This means the can be called to the floor at any time.

We are blessed to have a warrior for liberty as our Senate Sponsor. Senator Eric Burlison has made COS one of his legislative priorities. With your support and Senator Burlison’s leadership, we hope to come to the floor quickly.

In the House, our COS resolution is on the House calendar and can be called for a floor vote soon. Our Commissioner Selection Bill was voted out of the House Rules Legislative Oversight Committee last Thursday.

It should be placed on the calendar this week and thus it can be called to the floor immediately, as well. Representative Curtis Trent is our sponsor in the House. He is well-respected and has been a great champion for COS.

To use a football analogy, we are on the two-yard line and ready to punch it into the end zone. If you are a football fan, you know the last few yards are often the most difficult to traverse. This is where the team puts in its best blockers, calls its best play, and does its best to execute it perfectly.

All the practice, all the training, all the studying, all the work has brought us to this moment. Now, the House and Senate floor leaders must snap the ball and hand it off to Senator Burlison and Representative Trent. We must block for them and provide a running lane, so the team score a touchdown.

Watch your phone this week for a text alert in case we come to the floor. We do not receive much notice most of the time. As soon as we hear something definitive, you will be notified.

If you can come to the Capitol for the floor votes, you will not regret it. We had a great team of volunteers again last Wednesday. Citizenship is not a passive activity. Having a professional relationship with your legislators and being involved in the political process is how you make a difference.

Your Convention of States Missouri Team has had a tremendous number of Missourians step up to volunteer this year. We are diligently working to onboard, train, and support each volunteer. I encourage you to click here to learn ways you can be involved. We have developed COS University to be a great learning and training resource for you.

I hope you have a great week and look forward to seeing you at the Capitol!

In liberty,
Brett
