Brett's Blog Archive - December 28, 2020: Taming the Behemoth by Returning Power to the People

Published in Blog on January 03, 2021 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

Government based on consent of the governed sounds like a really good idea, doesn’t it?

Well, our Constitution was built on this unique principle. The fact is that the states created the federal government to protect their existence and the freedoms of their citizens from an overreaching and distant government.

Two hundred-plus years ago, that government had a multitude of faces: King George III and the Parliament which levied taxes, rules, regulations, and decrees with impunity.

Today, the states and their citizens have a similar government, with much of the same shortcomings, a multitude of faces, and a very "Georgian" attitude about control.

However, we also have the means to correct the direction of this ever-increasing behemoth in its mindless and endless appropriation of power.

That handy remedy is one part of Article V of the U.S. Constitution, which permits two-thirds of the states to require the convening of a convention to propose amendments to our Constitution. Already, we have 15 states onboard--including Missouri--by way of adopting the Convention of States Action resolution, and work continues in all 50 states.

This Article V effort is different from the 400-plus Article V resolutions which came before, because our resolution proposes a solution as big as the problem with three subject matters: term limits, fiscal restraints, and reining in the federal government.

The wording will be developed in the convention by commissioners sent from all 50 states with specific instructions as to what those various states deem acceptable and permissible. Incidentally, this constitutional procedures limits each state to one vote, no matter how many commissioners a state sends to convention.

In those states which have adopted the resolution, the work continues to develop the specifics related to deciding how the commissioners will be chosen, choosing those commissioners, and how those commissioners will receive their instructions.

In those states which have not adopted the resolution, we will be working with the various state legislatures in 2021 to find sponsors and supporters for the resolution, increasing citizen awareness, and educating our supporters on becoming active in their state and local governments.

In those states which will not be one of the 34 to adopt the resolution, we still have a duty to be present and active, since those states will also be invited to the convention and will need the same kind of education and support as the 34 adopters.

Throughout 2021, you will be hearing and reading about "consent of the governed," as we focus on specific areas related to this right and responsibility. We have lost our control of our government inch by inch and action by action.

The only way we will take it back peacefully is by the same route: one repair at a time, one amended law at a time, and one educated representative at a time.

Each One Learn One

Your mission in 2021 and beyond--should you choose to accept it--is to learn about the U.S. Constitution, choose one area of overreach which you find most egregious, and learn all you can about how it can be corrected.

When the time comes and the legislators are defining what they expect of the commissioners, your knowledge and input may be invaluable. It will almost certainly be needed when proposals are developed and the ratification process begins.

Each One Watch One

If you are not inclined to delve deep into the law and its intent and its abuses, then we hope you will consider becoming an elected representative’s watchdog. If each citizen were to choose one politician in their city, county, state, or federal government and learn all about this person’s intents and actions and monitor them continuously, then we would have a supervised government. There are 330 million of us and far less of them.

How do we learn what to do?

We will endeavor to communicate the ways and means to develop these goals in articles throughout 2021, and we hope you will also share this information with others. The efforts to save our Constitution go way beyond the Convention of States. We need everyone who loves our country and our way of life to be active. Let’s get to work.

We hope you have a Happy New Year and a productive and rewarding 2021.

In Liberty,

Brett
