Another state house casts a vote for liberty

Published in Blog on July 16, 2017 by Convention of States Project

The good news is coming in so fast we can barely keep up! Here's the latest legislative victory.

Yesterday the Utah House passed the Convention of States resolution (HJR8) on a 41-32 vote. The resolution seeks a Convention of States to propose constitutional amendments that limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, mandate term limits for federal officials, and impose fiscal restraints on Congress.

You can see a model of the resolution here.

"We're seeing our government destroyed in front of our eyes," said Rep. Ken Ivory, R-West Jordan, one of our fantastic sponsors in Utah.

"We see a court that is now weighing in and deciding what rights are instead of being an umpire," a Congress that constantly deepens the national debt and "we see a president who is legislating with a pen and pad" through executive orders, Ivory said.

To those who worry of a "runaway convention," Rep. Merrill Nelson, R-Grantsville, had this to say: "[a Convention of States] cannot run away. It is limited in scope by the call for the convention, by the resolutions." He also noted that any amendments it passes must be ratified by three-fourths of the states. "It takes only 13 states to defeat whatever is proposed by this convention."

This is an amazing victory for our team in Utah. Now it's on to the Senate! If you live in Utah, scroll down to learn the best way you can help make Utah the seventh state to call for a Convention of States.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
