America wouldn’t exist if the Founders acted like this…

Published in Blog on July 02, 2025 by Jakob Fay & Daniel Thiery

As America approaches its 249th birthday, it’s time to face an uncomfortable fact: this country never would have existed if our Founders merely talked about independence.

The heroes of 1776 created the world in which we live and produced the blessings of freedom we enjoy by their willingness to sacrifice. Although it may be apocryphal, Benjamin Franklin’s famous quote is certainly enlightening in this regard: “We must all hang together,” the doctor reportedly remarked as delegates to the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence, “or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.”

By declaring their independence from Great Britain, the Founders jeopardized their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor. They did not make this decision lightly or recklessly. They knew full well what it would take to maintain their self-governance, and it was a price they were willing to pay. They spoke often of posterity, trusting that even if they never saw the fruit of their labor, future generations would.

Acting with such boldness, they did not take kindly to passive onlookers who refused to enlist in the cause. “If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude than the animating contest of freedom—go from us in peace,” roared the Father of the Revolution, Samuel Adams. “We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouchdown and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!”

Such rhetoric should discomfort modern Americans, many of whom — like the Little Red Hen’s friends — have grown accustomed to profiteering off other men’s sacrifices without so much as lifting a finger to contribute themselves. Freedom, we must remember, is not free; it takes all of us to step up and fight for the future of this country.

This 4th of July, we should ask ourselves: if we had been in our Founders’ shoes, would we have acted, or would we have condemned future generations to tyranny and suppression? Would we have signed the Declaration, or would we have gone home, preferring, instead, to protect our wealth and our comfort?

Fortunately, our Founders made the right decision. Now, to preserve the country, it’s up to us to walk in their footsteps.
