In a two-part victory for the grassroots team in the Tar Heel State, the North Carolina House Judiciary 1 Committee considered and passed the COS resolution for an Article V convention and 34|Ready legislation on Tuesday. Introduced by primary sponsor Dennis Riddell, both bills quickly passed on a voice vote with minimal opposition.
“We have the power to initiate amendments … to the Constitution,” Riddell reminded his colleagues. “We don’t have to sit by and wait for Washington to get it right. We actually have a role here.”
“It would be legislative malpractice if we did not rise up and seize every possible opportunity and means by which to control what seems to be an increasingly out-of-control federal government,” he added.
Although the grassroots learned shortly before the hearing that they would not be permitted to testify, their presence was nevertheless felt, as seen in the committee’s rapid, favorable response to the bill.
“Make no mistake: they have been working hard behind the scenes to get this point,” COS Senior Vice President for Legislative Affairs Rita Peters praised the North Carolina team.
