A Fourth of July story for freedom

Published in Blog on July 05, 2018 by Laurie Wheeler

The following is a message from Jim Bost, Coalitions Director for Convention of States Virginia.

My earliest known ancestor, Johannes Bast, was a German immigrant in the early 1700s. Religious persecution brought him to America. (Johannes changed his last name to Bost about the time the family moved to North Carolina from Pennsylvania in 1754.)

Johannes' five sons--William, John (my direct ancestor), Elias, Jacob, and George--fought in the Revolutionary War. It is believed they became involved in the cause for freedom when British solders tortured Johannes' pastor, Adolphus Nussman.

Understanding the price they paid for freedom is key to my beliefs regarding the role of government. Certain rights are God-given. Government should never be allowed to infringe on those rights.

Limited government helps to ensure those freedoms. Convention of States believes a limited government is the best form of government. Therefore, I am not only a supporter, but also a volunteer with Convention of States.

Did one of your ancestors fight in the American Revolution? They fought for freedom. Because of the freedom gained, our Framers were able to establish a way to ensure that freedom through peaceful means, through an Article V Convention of States.
