Milestone: 7,000 Nebraskans sign the Convention of States petition

Published in Blog on April 30, 2018 by Joe Stephans

Over 7,000 Nebraskans have now signed the Convention of States petition, asking Nebraska state senators to vote in favor of the Convention of States resolution to propose fiscal restraints, limits on the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and term limits on Congress, the judiciary, and the federal bureaucracy.

Those petition signers are part of the 66% of all Nebraskans that favor a Convention of States, according to a poll taken by Moore Research.

Nebraska continues to gain supporters of the Convention of States resolution to rein in the federal government just as the effort has nationally. Convention of States recently crossed the threshold of 1,000,000 petition signers in the United States, and Nebraska is adding supporters rapidly.

Unfortunately, the increasing support for a Convention of States is not registering with Nebraska’s state senators. According to State Director Joe Stephans, only 31 of the required 33 senators committed to voting for cloture on Legislative Resolution 6 (LR6). As a result, the resolution never made it to the floor for debate in the shortened legislative session.

“This is the second year in a row where we couldn’t advance our resolution to the floor because of a narrow two vote margin which is disappointing," Stephans said. "Eventually we will have an overwhelming grassroots army in Nebraska, and we will clear the 33 vote hurdle. Because Washington, D.C., fails to listen--and even right here in Nebraska, politicians fail to listen to the people--our movement is growing.”

Stephans continued, “The May 15 primary and November election will allow that 66% in favor of the Convention of States to express their views and start the changes we need in our country.”

Convention of States Nebraska's plan is to continue to grow and to educate the people of Nebraska about the Constitution, Article V, and their Nebraska government over the rest of this year.

Nebraska’s Governor Pete Ricketts (R) is a supporter of the Article V process. Convention of States is endorsed by Senators Rand Paul (KY), Marco Rubio (FL), Ron Johnson (WI), retired Sen. Tom Coburn (OK), retired Sen. Jim DeMint (SC) retired Sen. Jim Talent (MO), Rep. Jeff Dunham (SC), Rep. Ron Desantis (FL), Gov. Greg Abbot (TX), retired Governors Bobby Jindal (LA), Sarah Palin (AK), Mike Huckabee (AR), as well as Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Ben Shapiro, Steve Deace, and many others.

These public figures stand with the grassroots in saying now is the time to put the brakes on the ruling elite, corrupt politicians, and the deep state to restore the republic.

“The American people understand that President Trump’s noble intentions of draining the swamp are facing resistance from the media, career politicians, and the deep state,” said Mark Meckler, President of Convention of States Action.

“The swamp is fighting to keep its power and no single person or President can achieve this mighty task alone," he continued. "The only way to drain the swamp permanently is to use Article V of the U. S. Constitution to limit federal power.”
