And they’re off! The race is on in Jefferson City

Published in Blog on February 04, 2020 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent." - Calvin Coolidge

The 2nd Regular Session of the 100th General Assembly is underway, and the legislature isn’t wasting any time at all. Your legislators have hit the ground running.

This is the fastest start to any legislative session I’ve seen in Missouri. If yours is one of the six new legislators this session, they have barely had time to find the cafeteria and coffee makers.

Last session Governor Parson’s priorities consumed much of the legislative calendar. For the 2nd Session, it looks like the legislature will lead the agenda.

Over 1,000 bills have already been introduced in the Missouri House, and another 400 have been introduced in the Missouri Senate. Few of these bills will ever make it to final passage, much less receive the Governor’s signature.

There is one resolution we’re very interested in. More on that in a minute. This is where you come in.

It is our responsibility to participate in the governmental process. This means educating yourself on local and state issues and interacting with your legislators. Your Convention of States Missouri team is doing this on a daily basis, and we need your help.

COS Missouri is moving our Commissioner Selection Resolution again this year. This year’s resolution has an extra twist. We are looking to remove the sunset clause from our resolution that passed in 2017. Nobody believes the federal government will reverse course and return constitutional decision-making back to the states. That’s why it is critical to make sure our resolution stays in force.

Our resolution has been filed in the Missouri Senate. It is called SCR37. By the time you receive this newsletter, we should be filed in the House. Keep an eye out for a call to action to contact your legislator, visit the capitol, and attend the upcoming committee hearings. These are your opportunities to make a difference!

Plan to be at the capitol for our Convention of States Surge Day on Wednesday, February 26. More info on that later in the newsletter.

As you can see, there is lots of work to be done. Let's get to it.
